Their often said in Martial Arts that the meaning doesnt lie in how good you are or what belt you've, rather the meaning lies in the trip. Before I get into What Black Belt Means To Me, I would like to speak about my journey of the past few weeks.

The Trip

Last week I had flown to Nashville to test for my long-awaited San Dan (3rd diploma Black Belt - This is a lot like becoming the state Teacher). Prior to the test I'd been teaching consistently since April of this year at my local gym and a friends dojo.

It'd been about 5 years since Ive last employed my discipline, Wado-Ryu Karate-Do, so my recollection of the device was very vague. After seeing numerous tapes of myself as a young martial artist, I'd re-learned my under belt curriculum, nevertheless I was struggling to recall my black belt curriculum. Ones under belt information is essential as it is generally accepted as the building blocks of ones training, If you know anything about martial-arts. On-the other hand, lots of people genuinely believe that your teaching really begins when you realize your first black belt. I couldnt agree more. When I was offered to Sho Dan (1st Degree Black Belt) my interpretation about the martial-arts and Wado-Ryu had grown significantly and I started to really learn.

In any event, I needed to learn everything that may have possibly been cast at me as it had been ten years since my last official test.

In July, I went to Nashville to teach with my highly regarded and beloved teacher Sensei Wayne Tyler. I con-sider him as a father figure in my martial arts career because of his vast knowledge of Wado-Ryu and unconditional love for his students and the art. Imagine being a researcher and your instructor was Albert Einstein that is what it feels like to be under the wing of Sensei Tyler (or Mr. Tyler, when I call him). Dig up more about by visiting our lovely use with. I had been in Nashville instruction with Sensei 2-3 hours every day for 5 days. I caught on my course and took the knowledge that was handed down by him and applied it to my education back Denver.

Again, since I didnt know what to expect, I conditioned myself to-be ready for pretty much anything. Not just was I practicing my katas and basics (Japanese kinds), but I was also managing 15-20 minutes on the rowing machine, 2 miles, three days each week and about 6 7 miles on the stationary bike. I properly passed my test and was promoted to San Dan on October 17th 2006. I must say, this was certainly one of my greatest accomplishments in my own martial arts occupation and a dream come true. It's taken me many years to achieve this goal, but it's reinforced my interpretation of being a black belt, or in my own case San Dan..
