Toenail fungus also known as onychomycosis is a condition that disfigures and can even kill your toenail. When feet remain moist or damp, the fungus can grow, causing discoloration and thickening of toenails. Since it's a deep red color and is used on the feet, it makes the wearer prone to discolored toenails. A toenail fungus may develop if you already have another fungal infection such as athlete's foot.

There are several different types of fungal nail infection, depending on the kind of fungus causing the infection. While sexual species are more capable of mutating and therefore more likely to become resistant to drugs - the same cannot be said of the sexless toenail fungus.

Consider seeking treatment from a podiatrist if thickened toenails cause discomfort when walking. This can also be caused when you cut your toenail too short, or nip it accidentally when you have cut it. This is also quite common among athletes. Even if treatment is successful, it may take up to a year for a new clear nail to grow.
