Thick toenails are often the result of a toenail fungus. This is both because nail fungus is extremely contagious and your shoes are already contaminated. Unlike in other kinds of fungal nail infection, infection occurs, initially, at the proximal nail fold (the base of the nail), spreading up the newly developed nail plate.

Eventually your toenail may crumble and even completely fall off; if not that your toenail can become so thick that it will be very painful for you to wear shoes. While nail fungus can affect fingernails, appears most commonly on the toenails. Most commonly, an infected toe will spread the infection to the adjacent toes; but it's also possible to spread a fungal infection to other parts of the body.

The two most common infections are both caused by dermatophytes. Prescription Onychomycosis cures can include some form of oral tablet or topical liquid that is applied to the nail and the nail bed these are often very strong and may cause reactions or mild side effects.

Nail fungus is not a serious disease in itself, but it should be looked at by your doctor. Going to nail salons that use inadequate sanitization of instruments (such as clippers, filers, and foot tubs) in addition to living with family members who have fungal nails are also risk factors.

If the doctor suspects distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (DLSO), a sample (specimen) should be taken from the nail bed to be examined. Complications from untreated toenail infections may include permanent damage to the nails, secondary skin infections and recurrent fungal infections in the nails or other parts of the body.
